Gulf Coast Aerosol Research and Characterization Program (GC-ARCH)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $3.65 million to a consortium of universities, led by The University of Texas at Austin, to study air pollution in the Houston area. The 16-month study will characterize Houston's particulate matter, how it travels across large regions, and how it affects health. This EPA project is part of a comprehensive air quality initiative called the Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS 2000) that will identify particulate matter and ozone levels, determine air pollution sources, and assess how contaminants are transported throughout the eastern half of the state.
